WISCONSIN NEWS OP-ED: THE PRESCRIPTION DRUG SCAM

Pat Nash takes a stand against the high cost of pharmaceuticals in this op-ed after learning that the prescription drug she takes cost three times more in the U.S. compared to Canada. She then discovered that the same is true for many other prescription drugs.

She also learned why pharmaceutical companies charge so much more in the U.S. – because they can.

Nash highlights results of a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in August 2016, which found that ‘per capita prescription drug spending in the United States exceeds that in all other countries.’ The study also found that it was more than twice as much as that of 19 other industrialized nations.

Yet lawmakers have yet to do anything to lower them. As she writes, “They’d much rather reap huge campaign contributions from Big Pharma than reduce the costs to taxpayers and help citizens afford the medications they need.”
